Understanding the Weight Components

Verified Gross Mass (VGM) Requirements

Since July 2016, SOLAS regulations require all packed containers to have a Verified Gross Mass (VGM) declaration before loading onto a vessel. Failure to provide VGM can result in container being offloaded.

VGM can be obtained by:

  1. Weighing the packed container on a certified scale (Method 1)
  2. Weighing all contents individually and adding tare weight (Method 2)

Road Weight Limits vs Container Weight Limits

Important: Container payload limits and road transport limits are different. Even if your cargo is under the container's max payload, the truck carrying it may have lower weight limits depending on local regulations.
RegionTypical Max Gross Vehicle Weight
China49,000 kg (with permit)
Europe44,000 kg (standard)
USA36,287 kg (80,000 lbs)
Australia42,500 kg
